Architecture
I've been working in architecture since 2015, when I enrolled in the M.Arch program at the University of California, Berkeley. Since graduating in 2018, I have worked full time in architectural practice. (For more details on my work experience, see my CV.) I hope to teach in addition to continuing my professional work. I am not currently licensed to practice architecture in any state, but am actively working towards licensure.
Although both my parents were also trained as architects, I view myself as a bit of an outsider within architecture, or I am skeptical of some of the received practices and traditions of architecture, particularly in an academic context. I feel some of my value, either within a firm or within a school, lies in my interdisciplinary experience and point of view. Part of what I find interesting about working in architecture is bringing my other interests in art, color, education, film, literature, etc. to bear on architectural projects.
In architecture school I took and taught several classes in the realm of building science, and I am passionate about finding architectural solutions to the energy and comfort needs of a rapidly changing climate. In my time working at Loisos + Ubbelohde, I have also been fortunate to be able to bring my artistic and curatorial interests to bear on museum projects. (See Project List.) I also have a love for existing buildings, particularly those which express something localized about a place, and am interested in adaptive reuse.
My research interests in architecture include: architecture and cinema, design pedagogy, daylighting, color, and architecture in rural America.
